Join the AATJ/JFLA Webinars for a two-part online workshop taking place on October 7 (Saturday) and October 21 (Saturday) 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Pacific time / 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Eastern time.

The recent exponential growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to significantly impact education, and these workshops will delve into the role of AI tools in the Japanese classroom, with a particular emphasis on ChatGPT.

The workshop will be led by Y.-H. Tohsaku from the University of California, San Diego, with facilitation by Yoshiko Saito-Abbott, AATJ Professional Development Director at California State University, Monterey Bay.

Session 1: “Exploring ChatGPT and its Implications for Education” (October 7, 2023)

In this session, participants will engage in discussions about ChatGPT, its functionality, and its educational applications. Key topics include the challenges related to AI in education, such as issues of hallucination, bias, and creativity. Furthermore, the session will address the significant hurdles and limitations educators must navigate to uphold the core objectives of education.

Session 2: “Effective AI Strategies for Enriching Japanese Classroom Learning” (October 21, 2023)
During this session, educators will explore practical approaches to harnessing ChatGPT and other AI tools to enhance teaching and elevate students’ learning experiences. Specific strategies for both in-person and online learning environments will be covered, along with insights into prompt design and assessment techniques in the evolving AI-integrated classroom.

These workshops will provide Japanese language instructors a comprehensive grasp of AI tools and their potential within educational settings. Additionally, they will explore the precautions necessary to address associated risks, including safeguarding personal information and mitigating copyright infringement. The sessions will also touch on integrating generative AI into self-study, tutoring, and collaborative classroom activities to augment the learning process.
