CLTA’s 27th Annual Summer Seminar for Language Educators will once again be held at UC Santa Barbara this summer, July 15th-20th, 2016.
At this summer seminar, there will be several language-specific strands available to choose from. In particular, there will be a Japanese strand led by Mr. Yo Azama (ACTFL 2012 National Teacher of the Year, 2013 Outstanding Teacher of America, 2015 Helgin Heinz Teacher Award Recipient) and Dr. Yoshiko Saito-Abbott (2014 Hal Wingard Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, and Director of the Monterey Bay World Language Project). This year’s Japanese strand’s theme is “Teaching Japanese to Build and Enhance Global Competence.”
Description from CLTA’s website: This strand will explore innovative instructional strategies to engage 21st century learners of Japanese language and culture in building global competence through analysis of contemporary human rights and social justice issues. Participants will be supported in the development of culture driven lesson plans and instructional strategies employing authentic cultural texts and other multimedia resources. Participants will also develop Integrated Performance Assessment (IPA) tasks that assess students’ linguistic performance, interculturality, and global competence, and engender critical thinking and problem solving that compel them to engage in global social action. Effective technology tools that promote and enhance communicative and global competence will be integrated throughout the program. This strand will be conducted mainly in Japanese.
